Phytoneuron 2010 Report

Phytoneuron published 57 manuscripts in 2010, January through December.  The publications include descriptions of new species, analyses of variation within species and species complexes, genus-level taxonomic overviews, discussions of nomenclature and formal typification, reports of range extensions and geographic distribution in Mexico and the USA for native species and non-native invasive species, interesting aspects of developmental biology, and a biographical sketch.

In total, 25 authors are represented in 2010.

Anderson, W.; Averett, J.; Barger, W.; Blizzard, H.J.; Harms, R.T.; Hatch, S.L.; Heil, K.D.; Holmes, W.C.; Jercinovic, E.; LeBlond, R.J.; Leoschke, M.J.; MacRoberts, B.R.; MacRoberts, M.H.; Mink, J.N.; Nesom, G.L.; O’Kane, S.L.; Poindexter, D.B.; Singhurst, J.R.; Sorrie, B.A.; Spaulding, D.; Spellenberg, R.; Turner, B.L.; Van Devender, T.R.; Williams, J.K.; Wunderlin, R.P.

Readership increased steadily during the year, except for the drop in December.  Unique visitors to Phytoneuron averaged about 550 per month over the last six months (July through December).  Total visits per month in the first 4 months averaged 291, but over the whole year the average/month went up to 605.  For the year, a total of 7624 visits to the journal were made, and visitors read and/or downloaded 12,634 articles (1.7 articles per visit).  Visitors were recorded from 45 different countries of the world.  Statistical highlights for Phytoneuron in 2010 are shown below in tabular form.

Phytoneuron manuscripts are published online only.  To fulfill ICBN requirements for effective publication, printed copies of articles with new names and typification are posted to 10 libraries on the same day they are published online.  The scope of the journal is limited to studies of plants of North America (including Mexico), Central America, and the West Indies.

Articles are published at no cost to the authors.  Because the volume of publication (number of articles and pages) has considerably exceeded original expectations, I have not followed through with the original intent to distribute a complete set of articles at the end of the year.  Libraries are free to make copies and encouraged to do so.

Sincerely,

Guy Nesom

Editor

The most-viewed manuscripts were those on Euonymus (355 + 154 = 509), Persicaria (435), and Pyracantha (324 + 108 = 432).  Others very close are Liparis, Amauriopsis, Verbena bonariensis, Dalea ceciliana, Fraxinus profunda, and Bill Martin. The Euonymus and Pyracantha files were the very first published and exist in 2 formats, thus the separate counts for those.

The “/” entry indicates a viewing of the top page (the page with the contents); about half the visits went directly to an article in another way (for example, from the ‘notification’ email, or from a URL sent person-to-person, etc.).  The “INFO” entry refers to the separate page that gives information about the journal.
